PUERTO RICO TRIP 2014: EL YUNQUE AND SAN JUAN

Part Two of our Puerto Rico Trip with Dan’s redheaded family is here! This portion of the trip was our non-Culebra days 😉

After 5 days on the island, we headed back to the mainland and spent a day in San Juan and a day in the rainforest: El Yunque. The rainforest day we hiked to the top of a mountain and got to see the radical view. We could see both the north and south side of the island from our vantage point. It was actually worth the sweat and complaining from this office dweller. It also reminded me that I really need to stretch my calves more often and work out. That being said, I made it and I loved being at the top. It’s a must do when you visit Puerto Rico.

In San Juan we went to my favorite spot: El Morro!!! I swear it is the coolest and best fort I have ever been to, and that means a lot coming from a girl married to Dan… who loves to visit every fort we get even remotely close to in our travels. #fortsarekindaboring” All that being said, do not miss this place. Every time we have been, which is already up to three times with us, we have been unable to control ourselves with the photo taking. It is absolutely the most photogenic fort eva! Dear future bride and grooms, please pretty please, book a post-wedding session with us and let us photograph you at this place for 2 uninterrupted hours. We may faint from joy.

After El Morro, we just enjoyed the streets, cats, and colors of Old San Juan. I think Dan and I started to annoy the red heads with all our photo taking. We seriously could not help it. San Juan is a photographic super star.

Puerto Rico Trip 2014: Culebra and Underwater Fun

Welcome to part one of our trip to Puerto Rico! We were there to photograph Lisa Ann and Jordan’s wedding and post-wedding session. Since we get to travel a lot we thought we would invite Dan’s family with us this time so they could share in the fun! Three of his four brothers and his mom came along: Heath, David, Stephen, and Sam! We spend the majority of our trip on the island of Culebra which is “about” equidistant from both the main island of Puerto Rico and St. Thomas. It’s only 11 square miles with just over 1,000 residents, so to tell you it is small and sleepy is kind of redundant. It is a PERFECT place to get away and we would highly recommend a visit if that is what you are looking for. We rented a house via VRBO and really enjoyed ourselves.

Another new and exciting thing about this trip is that we now have an Outex for our DSLR!!! We were able to photograph not only our couple’s post wedding session in the most beautiful water I have ever been in BUT we were also able to photograph ourselves and our family doing what we did almost the entire trip: underwater fun! We have wanted one of these for ages and this was the final push we needed to purchase one. It is so stinkin cool!!!

This blog post includes both iPhone and Nikon shots featuring:

  • The ferry to and from Fajardo and Culebra: about an hour boat ride for $2 (!!!!) The only other option is a tiny plane, which I was having no part of.
  • Flamenco Beach: One of the top 10 beaches in the entire world. This beach completely blew my radar for what a perfect beach is. It was and is and will be for a very long time, the ultimate beach in my mind.
  • Rosario Beach: We took a 30 min hike to get to the beach which meant we were among the only 2 sets of people there. Great snorkeling!
  • Zoni Beach: We could see St Thomas from here, which just made me want to go there too! It was a great beach to sit and talk about life, which is my kind of beach.

May West Trip Part Two: Oahu, Hawaii

And now for Part 2 of our “May West Trip,” the week in Hawaii!

Ahhhhh Hawaii. I love it so much… for so many reasons. This was our second trip to Hawaii, last December being the first. This time we spent time on the island of Oahu, staying in the iconic Waikiki Beach area. We also bought a three day GO Oahu Card, which got us into a lot of attractions. It was a perfect way for us to pack in some awesomeness on the trip and feel like we were saving a little money. I highly recommend it. We also brought the Oahu Revealed book along with us. It is by far our favorite Hawaii travel book. We have one for Maui too and it was like our bible last December. Do not be caught without this when you plan your own trip to paradise. Trust me…

Dan scored a ridiculously reasonable hotel within short walking distance of the beach. Our view was of the mountains which was actually quite nice! Here is the view and also an obligatory palm tree shot! 2014-05-11 08.15.26-2

The FIRST thing we did was walk down to the beach and get acquainted with this famous place. I’ll be honest, when I saw this statue I cried. I was just so happy and so thankful to be there. I had a moment where I was able to really see what a blessing it was to be there, to be hired by two sweet people to photograph their wedding, having been flown across the earth to be there. I’ll elaborate on the significance of that another day but suffice it to say I was overwhelmed and so so happy.Processed with VSCOcam with k3 presetBET_5056Damn what a good looking place eh? We went swimming a couple of times there, which is actually rare. Whenever Dan is in the ocean, he is doing some sort of sport. I can never get him to stop surfing for any amount of time to just float around with me. The fact that he did not have a surfboard was all that stopped him. He did eventually rent one for a few sessions but that was after I got my rare swim time. Clearly I felt a strong need to document the crap out of it. Here is a small percentage of the photos I took of that rare occurance, thanks to my LifeProof case and my iPhone 5s.

My sweet Dan. I love his man so much.computer edited 0024

Before Adam and Sachi’s Post Wedding Session (coming to the blog TOMORROW), Dan and I scouted out places to take them. They wanted less beach and more woods and plants for their session, so we took a couple of hours one day to find the perfect spots. Let me just say, I am so so happy they asked for that. I think otherwise we would have just beached it up (since we are complete beach people). Instead we found this MAGICAL spot: Puu Ualakaa State Park. Holy. Moley. LOOK AT THE VIEW! (yes Im yelling) You’ll see how it turned out with them. I died inside with happiness.Processed with VSCOcam with c2 preset2014-05-12 13.11.10

One of the days we went to the North Shore to see some famous surf spots and we also hit up the Dole Plantation. What a tourist trap! Personally Im all about trouisty things but this was a bit excessive. Most of the place was a store and the rest was just attempts at getting you excited about things to buy at the store. That being said… I learned that there are a TON of varieties of pineapple and that they are “wittle tiny babies of cuteness” as they grow. Also… Dole Whip: the most perfect treat ever, soft serve pineapple ice cream. I thought you could only get this at the Dole Plantation and The Magic Kingdom in Disney World however that myth has officially be debunked. I saw it being served outside of the Sheraton Waikiki AND I know its at the Polynesian Resort at Disney World.

I think Dan looks super handsome here. I know he’s kind of grimacing but it was a sweet moment. We walked to Pipeline (small day… no monster waves) and we were just staring at the ocean for quite a long time. I was taking some photos (as always) and he turned to look at me, squinty buy handsome.2014-05-11 15.56.45-1

We headed back to the hotel and then this happened out our window. Again… I cried. And Spazzed.

The number one thing we wanted to see and do on our trip was see Pearl Harbor and all the historical things they wanted to show and teach us. It was a bucket list item for both of us nearly all of our lives so… clearly we went. It was unbelievable and hard to put into words. You need to go and you need to wear good shoes. ha! Also, bring tissues, your camera, money for coffee (because it’s exhausting). Also… the USS Missouri is a must see. I dont think I really have the right words to describe the experience so I will leave that to you when you visit.

A somewhat logical step after that is the Byodo-In Temple. From war to peace.

Another beautiful night in Wakiki. We just sat and watched the sunset on this bench. That is what I call a perfect evening.2014-05-14 18.26.23-2

Other things we did? The Bishop Museum, which was SUPER educational and totally worth the stop. We also stopped in at the HE>i shop, where we got a sweet decal for the car. #heisgreaterthanicomputer edited 0029

OF COURSE we went to a Luau! How could we not?computer edited 0033We had a farewell swim the gorgeous waters of Waikiki, just hours before we met Ashley and Marshall for dinner and a mini-photo session. She blessed us with her energy and skill on a few rolls of film. I am dying to see what the images look like!! It’s been so long since we have had our photos taken and this was absolutely perfect timing in our lives. #happy Make sure to check out her work: Ashley Goodwin PhotographyProcessed with VSCOcam with c3 preset

Then it was the LONG trip home time. We fly from Honolulu to Portland Oregon to Seattle to Boston and then took the bus back here to Portland Maine. Not pleasant… except for three VERY pleasant details. Free drinks on BOTH of the two first legs of the trip and then on the Seattle to Boston flight we had an empty seat between us. OMG!! computer edited 0098computer edited 00952014-05-18 08.05.47

You know you are living in the right place though when you are just as happy to be home as you are in “paradise.” I would say we went from Paradise to Paradise.

Wisconsin 2013

Back in October (!) I went to visit my friend Annie in her beloved state of Wisconsin. We have been friends for almost 10 years, long distance. Whenever anyone disses the internet I kindly remind them that the internet is not only HOW I met one of my best friends, but also where we maintained it for nearly a decade. Yay internet!

We have traveled together a lot, some trips are even here on the blog (Vegas, Disney..) but this is the first time I have even been able to visit her in her homelands! It was so fun to get the local tour from her.

A few things to note about WI:

  • It’s precious. Like a lot of what I saw and did could only be described as “precious.” I liked that.
  • Door County is worth a visit for anyone and everyone, unless you don’t like precious places.
  • The Milwaukee Art Museum is an architectural masterpiece.
  • The Harley Museum is gorgeous, unexpectedly.
  • If you visit, prepare to eat… all day… every day…
  • Rainbow Umbrellas make all things better.
  • Holy Crap. Lambeau Field is impressive and shocking and… like many other things, worth a visit.
  • It’s only missing one thing, the Ocean
  • I need to shoot a wedding at the Anderson Warehouse in Door County

Here we go!

#coxesgotohawaii

Hashtag titles aside, we really are on our way! I am sitting at the gate in Boston, having already flown from Raleigh to here this morning. We are waiting for our flight to Seattle. Then it’s on to Honolulu tomorrow and Maui on Wednesday. #what!!!??!?! Dan is walking Hattie outside, trying to give her the best experience we can with all this flying. “Doggie Xanax,” as Dan is calling it, is going to be spiking her treats too so… we should be good to go there 😉

It is hard to put into words the way we are feeling today. I had typed and deleted quite a few sentences here trying to get it right. The sleepless nights worrying about if we are doing the right thing, and the hard decisions we had to make to protect our dreams are about to add up to this day right here. We are going. It is happening. We are chasing our dreams, in spite of the challenges we face.

Of course Hawaii is awesome and it’s going to be super fun, but the bigger picture for me is the symbol it represents. It means many things to me, some personal, but others simple… the fact that we didn’t compromise and we, with the help of so many of our friends and family, made it happen! We are headed to paradise to reconnect, fall more in love, appreciate this wonderful planet that God made, and to…. wait for it… HAVE FUN! We promise we will take you along for the journey via our blog, facebook and instagram. Afterall, you guys had a hand in getting us there.

God Bless and pray for us in all these flights. whew!
